Subject:        Academic Year 2007 – 2008 – Minority Scholarships

 

The American Institute of Chemical Engineers is offering scholarship awards to qualified ethnic minority high school graduating seniors during the 2005-2006 school year who intend to enroll in a four-year college during the 2006-2007 academic year and plan to major in science or engineering with a preference for chemical engineering.  Scholarships will be offered at both the National and Local levels. We request that high school counselors and chemistry teachers distribute the scholarship applications to qualified candidates.  Eligibility rules are as follows:

 

National AIChE Minority Scholarship (National AIChE Sponsored, $1,000) – underrepresented minorities

1.        Applicants must be members of a minority group that is underrepresented in chemical engineering (i.e., African-Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, or Alaskan Natives).

2.        Applicants must currently reside within the boundaries of the Puget Sound Section AIChE: Whatcom, Skagit, Snohomish, King, Pierce, Thurston, Mason, Jefferson, Clallum, and Grays Harbor Counties of the State of Washington .

3.      Applicants must be high school graduates during the 2006-2007 academic year and plan to enroll during the 2007-2008 academic year in a four-year university offering a science/engineering degree. Preferred nominees will demonstrate a preference for a degree in chemical engineering.

4.        The selection of winners will be based on the applicant's academic record, participation in school and work activities, reason for choosing science or engineering, and financial need.

 

Puget Sound Section Minority Scholarship (Local AIChE Sponsored, $ 1000) – all ethnic minorities

Application forms and official information is attached and can be downloaded from the AIChE web site (www.aiche.org).  The nomination information package must be mailed directly to the following address:

The package should be postmarked by April 20.

 

The AIChE Puget Sound Section will review each nomination package and forward the chosen nomination packages (by the national Office deadline of May 15, 2007) to the AIChE National Office.  Awards from the Puget Sound Section AIChE will be announced by May 8 date and the Local Section scholarship winner (and guest) will receive an invitation and dinner at the Local Section dinner meeting in May 2007. Awards from National AIChE will be announced by July 2007.
