PresentationMicrofluidics for Low Cost Medical Diagnostics
Date
Tuesday, November 8, 2005
SpeakerDr. Gonzalo Domingo, research scientist from PATH (Program for Appropriate Technology and Health) (http://www.path.org/about.php) and formerly Research Scientist, Muheza Designated District Hospital, Tanzania and Seattle Biomedical Research Institute. He will be discussing development of microfluidics-based hand held medical diagnostic devices, or "lab cards." The hand-held real-time diagnostic device has limitless potential for cost-effective and accurate detection of pathogens and environmental contaminants. The work has progressed to prototype development in partnership with Micronics http://www.micronics.net/, Nanogen http://www.nanogen.com/, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The work, funded by the Global Health Initiative, is a continuation of Dr. Paul Yager's work on the microfluidics-based diagnostic device that he discussed with our chapter in September 2002 http://www.uwnews.org/article.asp?articleID=11066. Since then, the work has progressed to implementation; and, in partnership with PATH, Micronics, Inc. http://www.micronics.net/, and Nanogen http://www.nanogen.com/, the project is in the engineering and development stages.
