ABOUT THE MEETING
SPEAKER
Russ Crawford, Manager of Process Engineering at the
Anacortes Refinery
Russ Crawford graduated from the
University of Washington in 1977 with a BS in Chemical Engineering. He worked
for Union Oil of California (now Unocal) for 20 years at three refinery
locations in Texas and California. Russ joined KBC in 1997 for two years,
participating in refinery studies to improve profitability for UDS, Mobil, KOA,
and Fuji. He joined Tesoro in October 1998 following Tesoro's purchase of the
Anacortes refinery from Shell. He is currently the Manager of Process
Engineering at the Anacortes refinery (now known as Tesoro Northwest).
THE PROGRAM
Part 1 - Who is Tesoro?
With all the oil company reshuffling in
the past few years, it's a rare refinery that hasn't changed the name on its
door lately. The Anacortes refinery is just one of two recent refinery
acquisitions for Tesoro. Tesoro, based in San Antonio, Texas, began as a
petroleum exploration company. It entered the oil refining business with the
startup of its first refinery in Kenai, Alaska in 1969. In 1998 it purchased a
second refinery, located in Honolulu, Hawaii, and shortly thereafter, the
Anacortes refinery.
Part 2 - Tesoro Northwest's Upgrade to a Virtual Control
Room.
The advances in technology in the
instrumentation and information systems are now allowing refiners to skip a few
generations of DCS control systems when modernizing. The technology is growing
as fast as the capability of the PC market. The "Foundation Fieldbus"
concept can further advance the integration of control systems and information
systems. A virtual control room is now possible.
