Topic: A History of Chemical Engineering in the Last Millennium Speaker: Dr. Bruce A. Finlayson, AIChE National President and Rehnberg Professor of Chemical Engineering, University of Washington. Date: Tuesday, January 11, 2000 Time: Social Hour: 6 p.m. Dinner: 7 p.m. Presentation: 8 p.m. ABOUT THE PROGRAM A History of Chemical Engineering in the last Millennium How can chemical engineering have a 1,000 year history when the first chemical engineering degrees were only awarded 100 years ago? This talk will take you through an illustrated picture of the world before chemical engineering was named. Anything in Perry's Chemical Engineering Handbook will be defined as chemical engineering no matter when it was done or what it was called. Of course, most of the developments occurred in the last one hundred years, including the inventions of Haber process to make ammonia, PVC (by a UW graduate), penicillin, the catalytic converter for the automobile, and many other improvements that chemical engineers have brought to the world. The talk will conclude with an overview of the steps AIChE is taking to be relevant to the future of chemical engineering as it branches out into diverse, multidisciplinary areas. Bruce will gladly field questions about the AIChE’s bold, new plans.LOCATION: Jake O'Shaughnessey's 401 Bellevue Square Bellevue, Telephone 455-5559 DIRECTIONS: From Seattle:
