| Insight into ASME Standard for Bioprocessing Equipment (ASME BPE-2002) for consulting, design and process engineersMeeting Date
Tuesday, March 14, 2006SpeakerJeremy Higginson, Director of Design Engineering for Sharpe Mixers in Seattle ProgramIn 1988, many with ASME expressed interest in developing standards for the design of equipment for the biopharmaceutical industry. After many committee meetings and consensus building, the first edition of the BPE standard was approved as an American National Standard in 1997. It was updated in 2002 and is currently undergoing another update, to be released in the next year or so. BPE stands for Bioprocessing Equipment and as the name suggests it is directed at the design, inspection, and testing of equipment for pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and personal care product plants. This presentation will cover the need for such a standard, major points within the standard, and current developments affecting the next version. About the SpeakerJeremy Higginson is the Director of Design Engineering for Sharpe Mixers in Seattle. He graduated with a BSME from Gonzaga University in 1998 and received his PE license for Washington State in 2003. He is a certified engineering manager and has 8 years experience in the design of mixing equipment. He has designed equipment for Merck, McNeil, PureFlo, Schering Plough, Alfa Laval, Elan, Eli Lilly, Zymogenetics, and others in the biopharma industry. He is currently on the mixer subcommittee of the Design for Sterility and Cleanability section of the BPE standard.
