Disaster and Energy Security by Andrew Sloley, Principal Engineer, VECO USA, Inc.
The impact of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita continues to be felt. One of the major results was temporary reduction in refining capacity. The immediate affect raised gasoline prices. Now heating oil and gas prices have followed the same type of rise. How long will it take to recover from this? Could it happen again? What other disasters could hit us as hard? We'll look at the damage from Katrina and Rita: short-term steps to reduce the affect: current rebuilding status: and lessons learned. Finally, some of the other places in the energy conversion system (oil refineries) vulnerable to disaster will be examined. About the SpeakerAndrew Sloley is a Principal Engineer with VECO USA, Inc. He specializes in distillation systems for refineries and petrochemical plants. He has authored or co-authored over 100 articles, conference presentations, and other publications. These have covered troubleshooting, design, process analysis, and project management.
