UW ChE Student Presentations

Date

Speakers and Topics

The following students will give presentations at the May 10, 2005 meeting of PSAIChE:

Speaker:  Adam Oliver

Title: "The Effect of Temperature on the Rheology of a New Liquid Toner"

Abstract:  A new liquid toner is being developed for operation in a printing process in which ranges between room temperature and 70˚C.  Poor print quality and equipment jamming appear to result from unwanted viscosity changes in the ink over this temperature range.  This behavior is quantified, and an explanation for it is determined.

Speaker: Yo Yamazaki

Title: "The Effect of Cationic Solutes on the Wettability of Cellulose and the Strength Properties of Paper"

Abstract: Excessive cationic surfactant material in the wet end of the papermaking process appear to have deleterious effects on paper quality.  This is explained in terms of changes caused in cellulose fiber wettability, which is measured and correlated with measured strength properties of hand sheet specimens.

Speakers: Albert Chang and Nicholas Tapias

Title: "Polymer Mixing in Water Treatment"

Abstract:  A group of chemical engineering juniors are working with Steve Drury, of Sharpe Mixers, and Jim Pitts, of the Renton Wastewater Treatment Plant, to see if we can suggest ways to reduce the amount of polymer used in one part of the process (to cause coagulation).   While the entire physics can’t be simulated, critical parts can be, and the group is working to do that.  Some of the group is measuring the non-Newtonian viscosity as a function of shear rate and concentration, some are doing simulations of non-Newtonian flow and dispersion in laminar flow in mixers using FEMLAB, and some are looking at the mass transfer of chlorine from sodium hypochlorite that is put into the waste stream before it is sent to Puget Sound (before it enters the long tunnel).  One junior is experimenting with viscoelastic flow in FEMLAB (which hasn’t been done before), since the real situation involves viscoelastic flow.  The members of the group are Angelo Ambion, Albert Chang, Diana Chung, Joanne Crompton, Dan Ho, Tian Huang, Toai Nguyen, Thin Thin Swe,  Nick Tapias, Sheena Vince Cruz, and Daniel Walker.
