Program
Atlas Castings & Technology is a jobbing foundry that makes steel and stainless steel sand castings. Cast stainless steel alloys are different from their wrought relatives. The talk will serve as an introduction to the cast alloy groups of stainless steels (austenitic, duplex, super austenitic, super duplex, high temperature oxidation resistant). Topics of discussion will be compositions, Achilles heels, heat treatment, welding, historical facts of interest and applications.

Elaine Thomas, Senior MetallurgistElaine Thomas has been a foundry woman for twenty seven years working at Atlas Foundry (now Atlas Castings & Technology) in Tacoma. She came to work at Atlas two years after graduating from WSU with a degree in Physical Metallurgy. Right after graduation she worked as a research engineer for Battelle in Richland. She works primarily with the melt shop and heat treating operations as well as being the manager of the chemistry and mechanical labs. Elaine has taught classes in metallurgy at South Seattle Community college and lectured for AWS, SFSA, AFS and ASM. Elaine is a Past Chairman for the Puget Sound Chapter of AFS (American Foundry Society).
