Power Plant Zero Liquid Discharge in the Arizona Desert |
Meeting Date
Tuesday, November 11, 2003
Speaker
Scott Tavaglione, P.E.,
Project Engineer, Ionics RCC
Program
Resources
Conservation Company (RCC), a division of Ionics Incorporated, has been
designing Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) evaporator systems for over 30 years.
Industries served include power plants, chemical, oil, mining, and pulp and
paper facilities. This presentation will discuss the design and start-up
of an integrated ZLD plant which processes 2,360 gallons a minute of cooling
tower blowdown at the 2.2 gigawatt Gila River combined cycle power plant in
Arizona, one of two of the largest gas-fired combined cycle power plants in
the world.
The Gila River ZLD system includes a pretreatment and reverse osmosis
system followed by twin evaporators. Working closely with the power plant
design team from NEPCO/SNC Lavalin, RCC developed a system that meets current
and future requirements. The ZLD plant was designed and delivered by
August 2002, 12 months after design activities kicked off. Construction
was completed in March 2003, and commissioning was completed by September 2003. www.ionics.com
