Speakers and Topics

The following four students will give presentations at the May 11, 2003 meeting of PSAIChE:

Speaker:  Kelvin Zin

Title: “Surface Modification of Membranes for Water Purification”

Abstract:  Membrane filtration of water from lakes and other natural sources is commonly used to remove soluble pollutants and humic matter by adsorption onto iron oxide particles that coat the membranes.  This research explores surface chemical modification of the oxide both to improve adsorption and reduce membrane fouling.

Speaker: Pawel Drapala

Title: “Thermal Diffusion of DNA”

Abstract: Recent publications documented the effects of temperature gradients on the migration of DNA by empirically calculating the diffusion coefficient.  Inspired by this research, the software package FEMLAB was used to model the above experiment.  The concentration, energy, and Navier-Stokes equations were solved simultaneously to yield solutions that closely resemble those obtained in laboratories.

Speaker:  Jake Koerner

Title: “Dynamic Wetting Properties of Dental Impression Materials”

Abstract:  Dental impression materials used for making crowns and inlays must provide dental registry but must also be easily removable from the patient’s mouth.  These two qualities may be characterized by the wettability of the material and were studied using a dynamic drop shape analysis system.

Speaker:  Don Montrose

Title: “Polymer Conformation Changes in Coatings of Magnetic Data Storage Media”

Abstract:  The production of magnetic data storage media depends strongly on the binder-solvent interactions during the drying process during which the solvent composition changes.  These interactions were studied using static light scattering.  The results show an initial decrease in the polymer coil size, followed by an increase as the final coating composition is reached.
