Tesoro ROSE Unit

Speaker

Paul Dofton and Dean Anderson, Tesoro Refinery, Anacortes, Washington

Date

Tuesday, March 12, 2002

Meeting Topic

Tesoro Refining and Marketing Company has completed work on a new 21,000 bpd (barrels per day) ROSE unit at their Anacortes refinery.  The ROSE (residuum oil supercritical extraction) process uses an efficient solvent deasphalting technology licensed from Kellogg Brown & Root (KBR).  With the ROSE unit, the refinery can refine heavier crude feed stocks and increase high-end product yield while decreasing heavy-products generation.  This presentation will provide an overview of super-critical solvent extraction technology as applied towards processing heavy residuum oils and its advantages over conventional solvent extraction.  There will be a very brief review of crude oil refining.  The speakers will also discuss some of the challenges met while executing this fast track project and will finish the presentation with a question and answer session.

About the Speakers

Paul Dofton is a senior process engineer at Tesoro Anacortes Refinery.  He has held a variety of process engineering functions that support capital projects and plant start-ups since graduating as a chemical engineer from Clarkson University in 1981.  He is new to the Pacific Northwest, moving here in August 2000 after spending eight years in Saudi Arabia where he was on the start-up team of a major refinery upgrade project.  More recently, following the successful start-up of the Tesoro ROSE project he is currently supporting an extensive revamp of the Tesoro FCC unit.  He lives in Anacortes with Cindy, his wife of 18 years and 15-year-old daughter Paige.

Dean Anderson is a process engineer with a chemical engineering degree from Washington State University (' 94).  Dean is currently supporting the daily operations of the Tesoro Anacortes Refinery's ROSE unit.  He has worked at the Anacortes Refinery for 3 years supporting various units including the Crude Unit, Vacuum Flasher, and Logistics.  Previously, he worked for a local engineering contractor on several projects completed on the Alaskan North Slope.  Dean and his wife Kim are lifers in the Pacific Northwest where they enjoy several outdoor activities.  Recently they celebrated the birth of their first child, Hailey.
