“Life-on-a-chip” involves ten investigators from various UW engineering and science departments who are developing microsystems to study how genes function in the cell. What is needed are devices for real time analyses at the individual cell level, for processing individual cells and microsamples. The goals are to be able to automatically detect rare cells in cell populations and to monitor metabolism in individual cells. As a Center of Excellence in Genomic Science, another goal is to train the next generation of interdisciplinary scientists who will bring creative approaches to studying biological problems through a genomic approach.
