"Life on a Chip"

Speaker

Mary Lidstrom, Ph.D, University of Washington, Microscale Life Sciences Center

Date

Tuesday, January 15, 2002

Meeting Topic

“Life-on-a-chip” involves ten investigators from various UW engineering and science departments who are developing microsystems to study how genes function in the cell.  What is needed are devices for real time analyses at the individual cell level, for processing individual cells and microsamples.  The goals are to be able to automatically detect rare cells in cell populations and to monitor metabolism in individual cells.  As a Center of Excellence in Genomic Science, another goal is to train the next generation of interdisciplinary scientists who will bring creative approaches to studying biological problems through a genomic approach.  Come learn more about this new center and about the ways chemical engineering students and graduates will be involved.

About the Speaker

In 2001 the University of Washington received a $15 million, 5 year grant from the National Institutes of Health to establish the Microscale Life Sciences Center, which is called “life-on-a-chip” for short. January’s speaker is the co-director of the center, Professor Mary Lidstrom.  Dr. Lidstrom came to UW in 1995 from Cal Tech, where she was professor of environmental engineering science.  She holds UW’s Frank Jungers Endowed Chair in Engineering with appointments in both Chemical Engineering and Microbiology.
