"What have we learned from a century of research on climate change:
Svante Arrhenius would be pleased"

Speaker

Dr. Bob Charlson, Emeritus Professor of Atmospheric Science, University of Washington

Date

Tuesday, December 11, 2001

Meeting Topic

Svante Arrhenius did the first calculations on the greenhouse effect because he thought the ice ages were due to low CO2.  He was right.  However, he did them in 1896, manually, and it took a year and a half.)

You've read about it in the newspapers - is global warming occurring due to people? - now is your chance to hear from an expert.

About the Speaker

Robert J. Charlson is a Professor Emeritus of the Atmospheric Sciences and Chemistry Departmens at the University of Washington. He is co-author or editor of 8 books, author of 196 scientific papers, and has had 6 patents awarded. Numerous honors have been bestowed on him, including the King Carl XVI Gustaf Professor of Environmental Scient, 1999-2000, Sweden, Gerbier-Mumm Award of the World Meterorological Association (with others), 1988; Charlson is a Fellow of several scientific societies. He is an expert in the effect of clouds and aerosols on climate warming, and in a recent article with John Seinfeld (chemical engineering professor at Cal Tech) reported that one of the major uncertainties in climate warming forecasts is insufficient knowledge of the effect of clouds and particulates on global warming. His most recent book (ed. with J. Heintzenberg) is Aerosol Forcing of Climate, Wiley, 1995. One of his recent papers is titled: "Avoiding circular logic in climate modeling". This should be an interesting talk about a topic that is of great current interest, and one that your neighbors have probably asked you about.
