TMDL Tools and Trajectories

Speaker

Paul Pickett, Washington Department of Ecology

Date

November 13, 2001

Meeting Topic

Although the requirement to establish Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) for pollutants that impair waterbodies has been in the Clean Water Act for decades, recent court decisions have triggered an escalated level of activity nationwide in the development of TMDLs. In the Northwest, the demand to conduct TMDL technical analyses quickly but still of a high scientific quality have resulted in several innovative new methods and adaptations of well-established approaches. This talk will provide an overview of several of the latest TMDL technical analytical tools for parameters such as temperature, bacteria, and dissolved oxygen, and will also discuss how this new methods may factor into TMDL implementation strategies.

About the Speaker

Paul Pickett is a licensed Professional Engineer with a M.Eng. from the University of California at Davis in Environmental Civil Engineering. He has worked in the field of Water Quality Environmental Engineering for over 17 years, first in northern California, and since 1988 with the state Department of Ecology. He has worked on Total Maximum Daily Load studies for the last 10 years, including projects on the Chehalis, Skagit, and Willapa Rivers, the Sun Lakes of eastern Washington. He is currently helping with a multi-state TMDL project for total dissolved gas and temperature in the Columbia and Snake Rivers. He lives in the Olympia area with his family
