ABOUT THE MEETING ARCO Products Company built the Cherry Point Refinery in 1969-71 and operated it until March 2000 when ARCO was purchased by BP Amoco, now known as "bp". BP is one of three of the largest integrated energy companies in the world with operations in 100 countries. Under BP's direction, many things at the refinery will change and some will stay the same. One of the major changes for this refinery is the larger global view of suply, market, and expertise than was available with ARCO. Also, there is now the opportunity for trips to London for several employees. The presentation will address how these changes and others, such as how the future of clean gasoline and diesel fuels and other industry mergers and divestures may affect the refining industry, the Cherry Point Refinery, and the local chemical engineering community. ABOUT THE SPEAKER Rick Porter is the Business Unit Leader at the BP Cherry Point Refinery. Rick and his family moved to Bellingham during the BP/ARCO acquisition negotiations last year. Previously he was the Business Unit Leader for BP Amoco's Toledo Business Unit in Ohio. He joined the Standard Oil Company of Ohio in 1974, which, through a series of mergers and acquisitions, is currently BP. He has held various technical and management positions in engineering, commercial planning, operations, acquisitions and divestments, BP Exploration/Alaska, Director of Refining Technology, and President of BP Marine Americas in Houston, Texas. Rick also serves as a Director of the National Petrochemical & Refiners Association representing BP. He is a member of the Refining executive Committee of the American Petroleum Institute and serves on te Engineering Advisory Council for the University of Akron. Rick is quickly becoming involved with the local community by serving on the board of the United Way of Whatcom County. Rick was born in the UK and grew up in Akron, Ohio.
