Speaker Maria Peeler, Washington Department of Ecology About the Speaker and Topic (http://www.ecy.wa.gov/programs/eap/pbt/pbtfaq.html) As chemical engineers, we need awareness of chemicals that Washington identifies as persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic. Substitutes are needed, such as for commonly used flame retardants (polybrominated diphenyl ethers) and mercury. We will also want to avoid using these PBTs in our designs/specs, and to be aware of potential sources as we may be involved in repair or maintenance of systems that have PBTs. Even common products used in the office or home have PBT (computers, electonics, fluorescent lamps). This issue affects all of us.
