Speakers and Topics

The following students will give presentations at the May 2007 meeting of PSAIChE:

(The students are all currently seniors in Chemical Engineering at the University of Washington)

Mechanical Testing of Fiber Reinforced Composites

(The students are all currently seniors in Chemical Engineering at the University of Washington)Composite materials are lightweight, strong, and relatively inexpensive to manufacture in comparison to conventional materials which makes them ideal candidates for applications where weight savings and strength are of the utmost importance. Composites consist of two components, the filler and the matrix. A greater understanding of the interactions occurring between these two components and themselves will stimulate the development of superior composites. The characteristics of the interface between E-glass fibers and a poly (Vinyl-Butural) (PVB) matrix were studied, and proposals were made to alter this interface with in order to obtain desirable material properties.

Defects Caused by of Electrostatic Interactions between

Silicon Wafers and Metal Oxide Slurries

Chemical mechanical planarization is used in the semiconductor industry to polish silicon wafers using a slurry of metal oxide particles.  When a particle and the wafer have opposite surface charges, an electrostatic force causes attraction which may lead to defects when the attraction is great enough to permanently fix particles to the surface.

Nano-Particle Toughening of Epoxy Composites using

Polyethyleneimine Dendrimer Shell Materials

A novel technique has been developed for toughening epoxy polymers used in composite materials.  This technique uses specifically engineered core-shell nano-particles to both increase the ultimate strength and the stiffness of the polymer. This paper investigates the effects of the polyethyleneimine dendrimer shell material on the physical properties of the epoxy polymer.
