Patents and Technology Licensing

Tuesday, January 9, 2007

Topic

Patents are a tool used by companies to gain a competitive edge. Companies, both large and small, realize the value of patents as a shield to thwart patent infringement suits and as a sword to diminish competition.

Therefore, companies are looking more and more to scientists and engineers to add value to their company by making useful inventions. As scientists and engineers, when do you know whether you have a patentable idea? And how do you protect your ideas? Having applied for and received a patent for an invention, questions on how you can leverage that invention to add value to your company, or for that matter how you can use someone else's protected technology that is essential to your business is the purview of licensing.
